Welcome
At Cameron’s School of Martial Arts we think self development is as important as self defence.
A great emphasis is placed on discipline and respect & this is also encouraged to be taken into daily life as well as within the confines of the class and has proven to be a great way of improving an individual’s confidence and outlook.
All classes are suitable for six year olds and above, including adults and we have a great emphasis on family participation which can deepen family bonds.
The classes will be of benefit to anyone wishing to participate in a regular form of exercise in order to improve their fitness levels. Over time the techniques will improve the participant’s strength, stamina and endurance as well as their balance and flexibility.
However, the Classes also benefit our mental health in many ways too. Having an extended family, a support network, a period of time away from the grind of day to day life, having a series of short term goals and long term goals to aim for are all beneficial to our mental health.
The main aim of Cameron’s School of Martial Arts is to instruct people in various ways to defend themselves, and others, against a wide range of threats.
The training will be a combination of fun, hard work and discipline but you will only get out of it what you put in.
The Martial Arts
At Cameron’s School of Martial Arts the main focus is on two contrasting but complementary disciplines. The throwing and locking techniques that will be used are heavily influenced by the martial art of Kempo Ju Jitsu. While all the forms, Katas or Hyungs and many of the strikes and kicks have been influenced by the Korean martial art of Tang Soo Do. Both martial arts have been practised and can be traced back for hundreds of years.
Origins of Kempo Ju jitsu
Records show that Jujitsu has been practiced for over 1200 years. In the 8th to the 16th Century Japan was in a constant state of civil war. If a Samurai (the ancient warriors of Japan) was unable to use a weapon they would fight empty-handed. In the early 17th Century, peace came to Japan and the status of the Samurai declined. This meant weapons became less important so they began to develop the unarmed techniques. It was in this time the name Jujitsu originated and came into general use.
Jujitsu comes from the words “Ju” meaning gentle or to yield and “Jitsu” meaning art or science. Jujitsu first came to Britain after World War II but while the interest in Jujitsu continued to decline in Japan it saw a growth in interest in Europe and America.
A Brief History of Tang Soo Do
Tang Soo Do dates back some 2,000 years. It is based upon the techniques of Chinese warriors of the T’ang Dynasty (618-906 A.D.) Which were merged with native Korean fighting arts, such as Soo Bahk Ki, Tae Kyon, and Kwon Bup.
The T’ang rose to power in China and were instrumental in developing martial arts in China. Many martial arts theories, rituals, and techniques were developed during this time.
Tang
refers to the Tang Dynasty of China, reflecting the shared cultural background between China and Korea
Soo
means hands but it also refers to fist, punch, or strike.
Do
means way of life or art.
Therefore Tang Soo Do means the study of hand techniques, which were influenced by the Tang method of martial arts.
